'Nature Based Solutions' became very prominent at the 2019 Climate Action Summit in New York. The term 'NBS' has been controversial because of its use in carbon market contexts.
Nature Based Solutions are understood as land-based actions that bring climate change adaptation and mitigation benefits. In 2022 the UN Environment Assembly passed Resolution 5/5 on Nature Based Solutions that provided an agreed definition of 'NBS' and guidance for use.
