Removals & ‘Net Zero’

We can not offset our way to net zero. Removals must not distract from emissions reductions.

CLARA’s position is that the limited carbon budget remaining to stay under 2 degrees of warming means that there is no space for the use of offsets – where mitigation action in one place ‘allows’ for ongoing emissions in another.

CLARA has also tracked the discussion about ‘removals’.  Removals can come from forest restoration and regeneration that increases carbon storage.  But other proposed ‘removals’ include geoengineering schemes.  How to think about ‘removals’ in the context of the global carbon budget?  We address those concerns in these linked pages.

What’s in the ‘net’?
